What's the best way to start a fundraiser?

I would like to start a fundraiser for a local family in Colorado. Their oldest daughter (15 years old) has been diagnosed to have a cancerous tumor close to her spine. She has been receiving treatment the last year and she is now starting to lose her lair (due to chemotherapy). Do to rising medical costs, they have had a hard time making ends meet. Can I get advice for how I can hold a fundraiser for their family? Has anyone held a fundraiser before who could give me some much needed advice? Thank you for all of your responses.
